Aluminium extrusion

Aluminium extrusion

Extrusion is a process used to create objects of a fixed cross-sectional profile. A material is pushed by a hydraulic cylinder through a die of the desired cross-section. The main advantage of this process over other manufacturing processes is its ability to create very complex cross-sections. We can produce profiles with a very smooth external surface without additional processing. The extrusion can be continuous, in theory we can produce infinitely long objects.
The size of the press machine regulates the size of the extruded material. The size of the extrusion is measured by the longest dimension of the cross-section, by aligning within the limiting circle.
The most important factor in the process of extrusion is temperature. It is critical because it gives aluminium the desired properties such as hardness and final finish.

Steps in aluminium extrusion:

  • The cylindrical billet of aluminum alloy is heated to 450-500 °C.
  • The aluminum billet is then transferred to a loader, where a lubricant is added to prevent it from sticking to the extrusion machine.
  • Substantial pressure is applied to a dummy block using a ram, which pushes the aluminum billet into the container.
  • Under pressure the billets shorten and widen, until they are the same shape as the die opening.
  • The soft extruded part passes through the opening onto a run-out table as an elongated piece.
  • It is then pulled to the cooling table where fans cool the newly created aluminum extrusion.
  • The hardened extrusions that are now of desired length, are brought to the saw table and cut or sawed.
